In 1983, Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei was chosen by French President François Mitterrand to redesign the entrance of the Louvre Museum. His glass pyramid faced fierce criticism from people who believed a modern structure did not belong beside the historic palace. But Pei’s vision was to create a bridge between the past and the future. Completed in 1989, the Louvre Pyramid transformed the museum experience by connecting its three wings through an underground entrance while allowing natural light to flow into the space. What was once considered controversial became one of the most recognizable symbols of modern architecture, proving that innovation and history can exist together.
